Using Videos/DVDs in the Classroom
Reporting Requirement
Under licenses negotiated with agencies holding Canadian distribution rights
for videos and DVDs, RRC is required to report on a quarterly basis the showing
of any programs whose Public Performance Rights are covered by the site
licenses. To make it easy for you to report the showing of any such program,
please complete the on-line reporting form. Library staff will compile the
information and forward a quarterly report to each of the agencies.
It is very important that we comply with this obligation so we ask your
cooperation in providing this information in a timely fashion.

Video / DVD - Commercially Produced
Public Performance Rights at RRC
- Under the Canadian Copyright Act any viewing or exhibition of
copyrighted videos or DVDs in a public place (Colleges and Universities are
considered public places) must occur under Public Performance Rights.
- Red River College has site license agreements for educational purposes
with the two major agents for PPR of films and videos in Canada, Criterion
Pictures and Audio Cine Films.
- This means that instructors may legally show in the classroom any video
or DVD from producers and studios for which Criterion or ACF has the
Canadian Public Performance Rights.
- The programs may be obtained (rented, leased, purchased or borrowed)
from any legal source such as video retailers or libraries. They must,
however, be legally manufactured copies.
NOTE: Copies that have been made from broadcast or cable, or transferred
from another copy, are not covered by the licenses.
Studios / Producers Covered by Our Licenses
The vast majority of studios and producers or distributors are covered by the
two Canadian agencies, including Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone Pictures,
Tri-Star Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Brothers,
Paramount Pictures, Pixar, Alliance Atlantis Motion Pictures, MGM Studios and
Universal Studios. The licenses cover any material, including documentaries and
other educational programs, such as the recent documentaries Super Size Me and
Fahrenheit 9/11.

Please note that you may not order videos / DVDs directly from either
Criterion or ACF. Contact Library staff if you have difficulty in obtaining a
title from local suppliers.
