Term Loans (Books) Policy
What is a Term Loan?
The Library recognizes that instructors may require certain books for longer than the regular period (3 weeks, plus
1 renewal) for developing courses and professional development. The term loan policy for books has been developed in an attempt to meet the instructor’s need while at the same time, keeping in mind the needs of all the Library’s clients for reasonable access to all library resources.
The term loan policy is intended for the benefit of individual instructors; it is not intended to create satellite library collections around the college for class or individual use.
Policy
- Items signed out on term loan are due in May. A notice either recalling books or asking for them to be renewed is sent in May.
- Only books directly related to courses taught or to program/professional development may be borrowed for a term loan period. Periodicals, books in the reference collection and general interest titles may not be borrowed for a term loan period.
- Day instructors and administrative staff only may borrow books on term loan.
- The number of titles that may be out on term loan to a person is limited to 15.
- Items signed out on term loan are subject to recall at the request of another borrower after the first 3 weeks. The item must be returned to the Library if it has been recalled. The book will be returned to the instructor after the requester has used it for one 3 week loan period.
- Items on term loan are not to be loaned to students. The Library is charged with the responsibility for maintaining circulation control of resources and is best equipped to maintain borrowing records and to do the necessary follow-up.
- Items not returned or renewed by the end of June will be considered lost and instructors will be billed for the unreturned items.
- Items such as equipment and lab manuals, parts catalogues, dictionaries, handbooks, technical standards or teaching tests which are considered to be indispensable to an instructor’s daily work are not available from the Library on term loan. These should be purchased directly by the department through the regular purchasing channels.
