Freedom to Read Week : 26 Feb - 3 Mar 2012

Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Schools and libraries are regularly asked to remove books and magazines from their shelves. Free expression on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read. You can learn more about Freedom to Read Week here.

The RRC Library has many "Freedom to Read" themed items in its collection. Check out some of these items that are currently on display in the Notre Dame Campus window display.

Media Services makes its 150,000th booking

Library Media Services congratulates Sandra Woloschuk for making our 150,000th booking!

Sandra is currently teaching the course "Training and Development" for the School of Continuing and Distance Education's Applied Arts and Communications department. On January 17th a congratulatory certificate and $25.00 Red Card were presented to her for making use of one of the Library's recent DVD titles, on training and adult learning, in the 150,000th booking. The booking was made December 12th, in advance of her January 17th show date.

The Library's current library system, Voyager, was acquired in 1997. At that time Voyager did not have a media booking application and Red River College was part of a team that developed its Media Scheduling module. Since going into production in the Fall of 1998, Media Services has made over 150,000 bookings using the module, an average of 11,000/year.

EBSCOhost: Research Starts Here!

The RRC Library subscribes to many of the databases available through EBSCOhost®, an Internet-based online service. These databases allow you to find the full text of journal articles, reports, etc. Academic Search Complete, which includes journal and magazine articles, book reviews and more, is our most heavily used database. Other databases included are Business Source Premier, Canadian Reference Centre, and CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Literature).

EBSCO databases have full text articles. This means the entire text of many articles is available through your computer. You can find an article and print it out in minutes, but first you must understand how to search. The library has a guide that illustrates how to use the EBSCOhost Databases.

You may access EBSCOhost either on-campus or off-campus through the Library proxy service. There is a quick link on the left-hand side of this page that will take you to EBSCOhost. Follow the instructions, you will be asked to login with your current Red River College username and password.
