This video lecture will discuss ways to approach the pediatric patient and the parent(s) when performing radiographic procedures. Goals and objectives of this video include : explaining an appropriate amount of time to spend with the pediatric patient during his/her first radiologic exam ; understanding prior experiences the pediatric patient has had and how the experiences may affect the current examination ; explaining appropriate occasions for pediatric sedation ; describing the use of emla creme for the pediatric patient ; explaining appropriate occasions when parent(s) should participate in a radiographic procedure ; explaining heat loss in the premature infant and how to minimize the loss; discussing ways to minimize hypoglycemia in premature infants ; defining stranger anxiety and its reference ; defining toddler and how to prepare this individual for a radiologic exam ; and discussing approaches to radiologic exams for special needs children.

This presentation will review PACS, HIS, and RIS systems. Review will also cover terminology and the image acquistion process. Goals and objectives include: describing predictors for success for PACS; explaining the different image types in the DICOM language; defining RIS; explaining what is involved with data delivery; identifying different types of hard-copy digitizers; defining HIS; understanding the relationship between radiation dose and quantum mottle; explaining factors that can affect image sharpness in CR systems; describing the relationship between conversion efficiency and sensitivity of CR systems and identifies advantage of DR comapred to CR..

This video provides a broad, introductory overview of the topics of radioactivity, radiation and the principles of radiation protection. It consists of four subsections : part 1 - Radiation physics, part 2 Radiation biology, part 3 Radiation equipment, part 4 Radiation protection principles. Part 1 briefly reviews the structure of the atom, atomic mass, elements and isotopes. The concepts of radioactivity and radiation are introduced, including both particulate and electromagnetic radiation. Radiation interactions with matter are presented, with emphasis on ionizing vs non-ionizing radiation. Part 2 introduces the concepts of DNA damage via ionization, cellular repair mechanisms, and the deterministic and stochastic effects of radiation. Part 3 looks at common man-made sources of radiation, emphazing medical applications of radiation. Exposure to man-made sources is compared with exposure to natural background radiation. Part 4 reviews radiation safety principles including: justifying the use of radiation; optimization and ALARA; dose reduction through the application of time, distance and shielding; radiation dose limits and personal dose monitoring; and contamination control.
