Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls play a critical role in today's infrastructure - from the construction of highway overpasses to building large vertical walls. The concept of MSE walls can be replicated on a smaller scale using newspaper and sand. In 2019, the U of S CGS student chapter hosted the inaugural "GeoWall" competition. Over 70 people, both students, and local engineers, attended the networking event to compete and build the highest, stiffest, and strongest MSE wall.
