Neurodiversity

A guide reframing common neurological traits as strengths and how to navigate within a school environment.

Introduction

Picture of Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin's road to a doctorate in animal science nearly didn't happen. The most common 'treatment' for neurodiverse people, especially those on the autism spectrum, was institutionalization. Through early intervention and mentors along the way, it has enabled her to complete schooling, write scientific papers on the humane treatment of animals in slaughtering plants, and speak on how the autistic mind views the world.

Doctor Grandin's inclusion in this guide speaks to not only the many 'types' of brains students have, but how to harness those differences in a beneficial direction for society in general.

Educating Different Kinds of Minds | Temple Grandin | TEDxCSU

Our educational system may be screening out creative people in the fields of art, music, science, and computer programming. The question I wish to ask is: What would happen to the great innovators such as Einstein or Michelangelo in today’s educational system? Educators need to understand that they have different kinds of minds. Temple Grandin is a professor of animal science and a designer of livestock handling systems. Her equipment designs and animal welfare guidelines have been used around the world. She is also autistic and her visual thinking skills helped her understand animals.

The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum | Dr. Temple Grandin | Talks at Google

When Temple Grandin was born in 1947, autism had only just been named. Today it is more prevalent than ever, with one in 88 children diagnosed on the spectrum. And our thinking about it has undergone a transformation in her lifetime: Autism studies have moved from the realm of psychology to neurology and genetics, and there is far more hope today than ever before thanks to groundbreaking new research into causes and treatments. Now Temple Grandin reports from the forefront of autism science, bringing her singular perspective to a thrilling journey into the heart of the autism revolution.

The World Needs All Kinds of Minds | Temple Grandin | TEDed

Temple Grandin, diagnosed with autism as a child, talks about how her mind works -- sharing her ability to "think in pictures," which helps her solve problems that neurotypical brains might miss. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, verbal thinkers, and all kinds of smart geeky kids.
