Temple Grandin's road to a doctorate in animal science nearly didn't happen. The most common 'treatment' for neurodiverse people, especially those on the autism spectrum, was institutionalization. Through early intervention and mentors along the way, it has enabled her to complete schooling, write scientific papers on the humane treatment of animals in slaughtering plants, and speak on how the autistic mind views the world.
