Research Data Management

Funding Requirements

In today's research landscape, funding bodies play a crucial role in shaping how data is managed and shared. As a result, many funding agencies have established specific requirements and policies that researchers must adhere to when handling their data. By familiarizing yourself with these guidelines, you can ensure that your research practices meet the expectations of funding bodies, thereby increasing your chances of securing funding and contributing to the global research community.

Tri-Agency Requirements

Some funding opportunities from the Tri-Agency, made up of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) have certain RDM requirements and best practices (links open in new window):

  • All institutions must create and make public an institutional strategy on RDM to receive funding from the agencies.
  • Data management plans (DMPs) are required when submitting applications for certain funding opportunities. While only some applications will require a DMP, the agencies do state that tenets of RDM to be seen throughout the application and research process in all applications. When working with Indigenous Nations, communities, and people, DMPs should be made collaboratively.
  • For researchers who are publishing their research in peer-reviewed journals, it is required that they make their publications freely accessible within 12 months of publication. This can be done by publishing in an Open Access journal and/or depositing their manuscript in a repository.
  • Researchers who have receive CIHR funding are required to deposit their bioinformatics, atomic, and molecular coordinate data into data repositories.
  • The agencies are currently working on phasing in a data deposit requirement for all researchers and will announce when data deposit becomes required.
  • The agencies also support and promote the FAIR Principles and Indigenous Data Sovereignty through individual Nations and community frameworks, as well as the First Nations Principles of OCAP®.
