The needs of family members are important considerations in intensive care units. In this context, the needs will be assessed in five dimensions: information, safety, proximity, support and comfort. This study describes the association between comfort and the needs of ICU patients’ family members.

Family presence during invasive procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (FPDR) is a highly controversial issue, with divergence of opinion among health professionals, with clinical evidence in favor, and with barriers to its implementation in comprehensive patient care. Many international organizations support health policies for its implementation, but it is not a widespread practice. Little research has been conducted on this subject from the perspective of patients and families. Objective: To learn opinions, perceptions, and desires of family members and patients in terms of family presence during invasive procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Despite increasing support for family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a review of the literature revealed no published protocols or training curricula to guide hospitals in implementing a family support provider role.

Adult patients (age 18+) admitted to the NTICU for at least 24 hours between June 2017 and November 2018 were identified. Near or at the time of discharge from the NTICU, the health unit coordinator or registered nurse identified the family member who was either the next‐of‐kin, surrogate decision‐maker, or person who had been most frequently present at the patient's bedside. This person was provided a packet containing a letter of consent and the Critical Care Family Satisfaction Survey (CCFSS).

Older people with cognitive impairment may have lack of understanding of their health and ability to co‐ordinate care needs. Family carers play a key role in supporting older people but the role of family carers in emergency discharge has not been explored well. Objective To explore and describe the role and contribution of family carers accompanying the older person with cognitive impairment to the emergency department.
