Substance use disorder is defined as “a cluster of cognitive, behavioural, and psychological symptoms indicating that the individual continues using despite significant substance-related problems” (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). It is characterized by the recurrent use of alcohol and other drugs which causes significant clinical and functional impairment, exacerbated health conditions, decreased functioning and quality of life.
