PubMed (Database Instruction)

This guide will assist you in using PubMed's new interface. PubMed is a free database that contains more than 30 million citations and abstracts of peer-reviewed biomedical literature.

Citation

There are a couple of places where you can access citations for articles found within PubMed.

1. Search Results page - Click the Cite link beside the result

2. Article Details page - Click the Cite button under 'Actions'

Clicking the Cite link or button will open the Citation Text pop-up. Here we can see a preview of the citation. There are actions across the bottom of the box.

  • Click COPY to copy and paste the citation into a document
  • Click DOWNLOAD .nbib to import the citation into a reference management tool such as RefWorks (More about RefWorks)
  • Click the FORMAT dropdown to change the citation style from the default to APA, MLA, etc.

PubMed & RefWorks

You can export records from PubMed to your RefWorks account (More about RefWorks). There are two ways to do this.

Single Record: download a single .nbib file from the Citation Text popup (as we saw in the previous box)

Multiple Records:

  1. Check multiple checkboxes on the Search Results page;
  2. Click the Send To action button;
  3. Select Citation Manager
  4. Click Create File.
  5. Import file as per usual
