Introduction

Inclusive writing requires our awareness of the ways bias and exclusivity may be present in our writing and intentional work to ensure our writing and language is inclusive.  

Ableism can be present in language and writing without our conscious awareness. Ableism is “A system that places value on people’s bodies and minds based on societally constructed ideas of normalcy, intelligence and excellence” (Lewis, 2019). 

Although we may not consciously incorporate ableism in our writing, it can still reinforce stereotypes and assumptions that result in a less inclusive classroom and workplace. Inclusive writing means actively questioning our biases and assumptions as we write.
