English Language Tutoring

If English is your second or additional language, English Language Tutoring can provide you with excellent short-term or ongoing support to develop your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for success in your program and profession. English Language Tutoring is delivered in-person at NDC or EDC, or online.  You can access up to 60 minutes/week of support for the duration of your academic program.

What are the options for English Language Tutoring?

There are two English Language Tutoring options: Short-term and Ongoing.

Short-Term English Language Tutoring:

Students can book a 30-minute English Language Tutoring session for specific, immediate needs, such as working on an assignment or preparing for a presentation. Students can book up to 2 sessions/week. Learn more about how to book Short-Term English Language Tutoring here.

Students should consider Short-Term English Language tutoring if they:

  • need support understanding assignment instructions
  • want to practice and receive feedback on an oral-presentation
  • have an assignment due soon, and need support with the writing and editing process

Ongoing English Language Tutoring:

Students can access ongoing 30- or 60- minute English Language Tutoring sessions each week with the same tutor to improve the specific language tasks they are struggling with in their program.

Students should consider Ongoing English Language Tutoring if they want:

  • support with ongoing development of speaking and pronunciation skills
  • strategies to develop listening and reading skills for program and occupation success
  • guidance to improve academic and professional writing skills
  • weekly support from the same tutor, over an extended period

To request Ongoing English Language Tutoring, please complete the Tutoring and Coaching Request Form. An Academic Success Centre staff member will contact you within two business days.

Please be aware that while we can help you with developing strategies to develop your language skills, we will NOT complete your assignment for you and are NOT a proofreading service.

How can English Language Tutors help?

Whether through short-term or ongoing tutoring, English Language Tutors work with students individually to focus on improving the specific language skills and tasks they are struggling with in their program. This includes:

  • Reading and taking notes more quickly and efficiently
  • Developing vocabulary and pronunciation, and learning to use program-specific vocabulary correctly
  • Participating in class, including asking questions correctly, and answering them effectively
  • Delivering effective presentations, including organizing your ideas and expressing them clearly
  • Contributing to group work, including sharing ideas, and solving problems
  • Strengthening writing by organizing your ideas, using the writing process, improving grammar, and expressing ideas clearly and correctly
