Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-based compounds. Carbon is an incredibly unique and versatile element that forms the foundation for all biological life. Carbon can bond with other elements, especially oxygen and nitrogen, and the resulting functional groups determine the physical and chemical properties of the organic compound.
Organic chemistry is a crucial component of many natural and synthetic products in a wide variety of industries, including agrichemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food science, plastics and materials, fuels, explosives, and as solvents and lubricants. As such, it forms the basis of many environmental pollutants and contaminants. However, it may also provide many solutions for a cleaner, greener future. (J. Mitchell)
