Humans have introduced a wide variety of harmful substances or pollutants into the environment, affecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil we cultivate. Many are not broken down or excreted, leading to a gradual buildup or bioaccumulation in the organism throughout its life. The process of biomagnification means that those higher in the food web are at greater risk, particularly apex predators. Much damage has been done, and the problem is only escalating. Nonetheless, new green technologies, regreening projects, and resolutions such as the Montreal Protocol offer hope for a rejuvenated future. (J. Mitchell)
