Microscopic organisms occur in the natural environment in abundance, but only a small number can actually cause disease and are known collectively as pathogens. This unit largely focuses on waterborne pathogens, i.e. those that can be passed on through the fecal-to-oral route, usually due to improperly treated water or accumulate in large amounts in wastewater. We will discuss the classification of pathogens as viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminths. We will also focus attention on coliform bacteria and the crucial role they play as indicator organisms when testing for pathogens. (J. Mitchell)
