Ecology is the study of organisms and their interactions with their environment. This includes relationships with other species, as well as the physical environment (weather, terrain, waterways, etc.). A basic understanding of these relationships is important when considering the human impact on environmental systems, particularly with regard to pollution and habitat loss. Ideas covered include populations, communities, ecosystems, nutrient cycles, energy cycles, trophic levels, and food webs. (J. Mitchell)
