Tap water is treated through an extensive, rigorous, highly regulated process to provide water that it is safe to drink and use for everyday purposes. We need to ensure the water has low turbidity, colour, and odour. We need the right balance of hardness and alkalinity to protect our pipes and distribution systems. Maintaining the right balance of chemicals such as dissolved oxygen, nitrates, phosphate, chlorine, fluoride, and metals (especially iron) helps ensure the safety of our water supply. (J. Mitchell)
