The Academic Success Centre is once again offering an online workshop series during the Fall 2024 term called Understanding How You Learn!
In these workshops, we'll discuss four topics which impact learning in significant ways: the brain, critical thinking, stress, and procrastination. We will explore how these topics influence your learning and how to leverage this understanding to your time at college and beyond. These workshops will be hosted by the ASC's Academic Coaches!
Each workshop will be offered twice on the same day: over the lunch hour and at the end of the day. Attend whichever one fits best with your schedule!
Read below for workshop dates, topics, descriptions and meeting links. If you plan to attend a workshop and require accommodations, please email us: tutoring@rrc.ca.
Workshop recordings will be made available below once workshop dates have passed.

How does the brain learn? What can you do to maximize your brain's learning potential?
Description: When we learn, important changes take place in our brain. Our brain's neurons fire to create connections between ideas, we move new information into long-term memory, and we solve problems! There are simple things anyone can do to study smarter, not harder. Join this workshop to explore what the learning brain needs and how you can maximize your brain's potential.
Date: Tuesday, September 10th from 12:15-12:45pm AND 3:15-3:45pm (click here to join the meeting)
What is critical thinking? Why do we talk about it so much?
Description: Learning in college involves taking in a lot of new information. Often students are asked to "think critically" about that new information in class and on assignments, but what does that mean? Join this workshop to explore the idea of critical thinking as a tool that can help students understand, apply, and evaluate what they learn in college. Learn about steps that students can practice to develop their critical thinking skills.
Date: Tuesday, September 17th from 12:15-12:45pm AND 3:15-3:45pm (click here to join the meeting)
How does stress impact your ability to learn? What can you do about it?
Description: Everyone has stress - it's part of the human experience! But when does stress become unhelpful and what can we do about it? Join this workshop to learn about what's going on in the stressed-out brain; how stress can impact your ability to learn and recall knowledge; and how to manage unhelpful stress!

Why do we all procrastinate so much? How can we control it?
Description: Join this workshop to examine what procrastination is really about. (It may not be about what you think!) Through a mix of research, case studies and concrete tips, this session will help you navigate feelings and thoughts connected to tasks and motivate you to take action!
