Understanding How You Learn Workshop Series 2024

The Academic Success Centre is once again offering an online workshop series during the Winter 2024 term called Understanding How You Learn!

We've identified four topics which impact learning in a significant way. By exploring these topics - the brain, critical thinking, stress and procrastination - you'll understand their influence on learning and leverage this understanding to your time here at college, and beyond.

Read below for workshop dates, topics, descriptions and meeting links.

Workshop recordings will be made available below once workshop dates have passed.

Workshop 1: The Brain & Learning

Workshop 1: The Brain & Learning

How does the brain learn? What can you do to maximize your brain's learning potential?

Description: When we learn, important changes take place in our brain. Neurons are firing to create connections between ideas, information is moved into long-term memory, and problems are being solved. There are simple things anyone can do to study smarter, not harder. Join this workshop to explore what the learning brain needs and how you can maximize your brain's potential.

Date: Friday, January 19th from 12:15-12:45pm

Workshop 2: Critical Thinking & Learning

Workshop 2: Critical Thinking & Learning

What is critical thinking? Why do we talk about it so much?

Description: Learning in college involves taking in a lot of new information. Often students are asked to "think critically" about that new information in class and on assignments, but what does that mean? Join this workshop to explore the idea of critical thinking as a tool that can help students understand, apply, and evaluate what they learn in college. Learn about steps that students can practice to develop their critical thinking skills.

Date: Friday, January 26th from 12:15-12:45pm

Workshop 3: Stress & Learning

Workshop 3: Stress & Learning

How does stress impact your ability to learn? What can you do about it?

Description: Everyone has stress - it's part of the human experience! But when does stress become unhelpful and what can we do about it? Join this workshop to learn about what's going on in the stressed out brain; how stress can impact your ability to learn and recall knowledge; and how to manage unhelpful stress!

Date: Friday, February 2nd from 12:15-12:45pm

Workshop 4: Procrastination & Learning

Workshop 4: Procrastination & Learning

Why do we all procrastinate so much? How can we control it?

Description: Join this workshop to examine what procrastination is really about (it may not be about what you think!). Through a mix of research, case studies and concrete tips, this session will help you navigate feelings and thoughts connected to tasks and move you to motivation.

Date: Friday, February 9th from 12:15-12:45pm
